Tips for Improving Your Golf Swing

Golf is a sport enjoyed by many, but perfected by few.  One of the great things about golf is that, on any given day, on any given hole, an amateur can play like a professional.

While the success of a great game of golf can be exhilarating and gratifying, a consistently high score can bring about an equal but opposite amount of frustration.  And, typically, the root of all a golfer’s problems comes down to one thing: the swing.

There are a lot of elements to a perfect swing, and to achieve it, practice makes perfect.  The key of the perfect swing is to execute it unconsciously.  That is, without thinking about it.  First you must identify your mistakes, and then you must laboriously work to correct them.  Then, with enough time and practice, you’ll find that you’ll be able to pull off your meticulously practiced swing without having to think about all the little particulars.

While achieving the perfect swing is far more complicated than just a few easy steps, there are some simple tips that will help any golfer’s game.

1.       Grip

You want to make sure that the palms of your hands are facing each other and that they remain centered on the club.  If you turn your hands too far to the right the grip will be too strong.  To the left, they will be too weak.  If you cross your right hand to the left and your left hand to the right, it’s game over.  You need a nice, neutral grip with medium pressure.

2.       Posture

You should plant your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees, bend your body from the hip sockets (not from the shoulders), and keep your back straight.  Then, in this position, let your arms hang loose.  Where your left hand hangs is where you should be holding the club (if you’re right handed).

3.       Pivot/ Hand-Arm Relationship

First, check your posture.  During the backswing, shift your weight to your right foot and release to the instep of your left foot so your stance is now behind the ball rather than aligned with it.  Then, shift your weight back to the left, starting with the hips in a lateral motion.  By the end of the swing you should have 90 percent of your weight on your right foot.  Your left arm will be straight in both your posture and your impact with the ball, and should be a 90 degree angle at the height of the backswing.  Your right arm will follow suit.

4.       Alignment

You’ll want to be sure that you have mastered your grip, posture, and pivot before you start really concentrating on your alignment.  Your alignment is how you line up to a target, and it is crucial for getting the ball where you want it to be.  The simplest way to explain alignment is with the railroad metaphor.  Your feet, hips and shoulders are on one track while the club face and ball are on another.  Don’t point your shoulder directly at your target.  Point it just slightly left on an imaginary, parallel track.
